Plant Observations

Seed Observation #6

This is out last seed observation. Not much has happened. After your journal entry today, plant your plant in some soil and see if it will continue to grow!

Seed Observation #5

I hope that your seed is starting to look like a plant. If your seed hasn't done anything, see if you can try again with a seed that you find at home (or you can come grab a new seed from school if you wish). Make your observations in your journal. Here are some words you can use:

little roots on long roots, longer stem, bigger leaves, tiny shoot, seed coat fell off, seed pieces are shriveling, growing out of the bag

After doing your plant journal, you can listen to this story called "The Bad Seed" by Jory John

Ask your child these questions after the story.

  1. What happened that made the seed become so bad?
  2. What did you enjoy about this story?
  3. Another word for being bad is sinning. Remember how everyone has that sin problem  in them, including you, your brothers and sisters and even your parents? In what ways have you been a bad seed, that you have been sinning?
  4. What does Jesus want us to do with our sins? Does he want us to be a bad seed?
  5. With Jesus in our hearts, we should want to be a good seed and spread his love to others! Sometimes, we will still be a bad seed, but God is always there ready to forgive us and keep on loving us. He also gave you parents, who have the job of teaching you to love God and others and be a GOOD SEED!
  6. Optional: Draw a picture of how you practicing being a good seed. What can you do?

Seed Observation #4

For this observation, your seed should be showing roots or a stem. Sometimes seeds need a little bit of patience. If nothing is happening to your seed, or if its growing mold, you may want to 'plant' a new seed. Make your observations in your journal. Here are some words/phrases that you can use or come up with your own.

long stem, lots of roots, 2 leaves, seed is split, starting to grow out of the bag, seed coat is stuck on the stem, the seed coat fell off the stem

Optional: Listen to Mrs. Ferrie read the story "The Watermelon Seed", written by Greg Pizzoli. After listening to the story, talk about:

  1. What would happen if you swallowed a seed?
  2. Imagine that a seed could actually grow inside a person. What would happen? (Use your imagination and be creative.) Share your story with Mrs. Ferrie through a video or make a book/draw a picture of what would happen and send pictures to Mrs. Ferrie.

Seed Observation #3

For this observation, your seed should be doing something. Make your observations in the journal. Here are some words/phrases that you can use or come up with your own.

longer roots, cracked shell, stem, more roots, growing taller, roots are going down, etc

In the video, Mrs. Ferrie reads the story "Once There Was a Seed" written by Judith Anderson.

Plant Observations #2

For this observation, it probably doesn't look like much is happening to the seed but the seed should have almost doubled in size. Soon (and maybe your seed already) a crack will appear. Make your observations in the journal. Here are some words that you could use:

bigger, larger, swelled, cracked, rounder

In the video, Mrs. Ferrie shares what is happening to her seed and then shows some different kinds of seeds that God has created.

Plant Observations #1

This week we are going to start learning about plants and the best way to learn about plants is to plant a seed and see what happens. Today, you can go to LEARN ALBERTA and scroll down to BOOKFLIX. Once at book flix, you can search for "The Tiny Seed" by Eric Carle. The story on bookflix is animated, so your child is sure to enjoy it.

Then get out the bag that has a paper towel and seed in it and the little booklet "My Plant Journal". Today we are going to observe our seed and fill out the first page of "My Plant Journal". Please watch the video to see how we are going to do this.

Then water your seed and tape it up on a sunny window. We are going to make observations twice a week for three weeks!
